Do you know that one in ten appliances needs service within the first year? Electric ranges are the exception. Mostly.
Why?
Well, electric ranges have always been made the same way. They’re refined technology- much like microwaves.
Most new electric ranges with smooth Ceran glass tops are just like the ones I sold 39 years ago when I started at Yale.
Most of the glass for the stovetops is still made by SCHOTT – the same manufacturer – even decades later.
However, service rates increase when appliances have more features, depending on the brand.
In this article, you will learn about the most reliable electric ranges to consider, based on over 33,000 service calls logged last year.
đź“ŚNote: This article is about electric ranges only. The most reliable induction ranges are in a separate article. Click here for our most reliable induction ranges.
Why Do Some Electric Ranges Need More Repairs?
As I said, the ovens and burners of an electric range haven’t changed much.
Manufacturers have added features like Wi-Fi connectivity, convection baking, and even air fry modes.
If we look at service rates, more features in this case do increase the need for service.
By the way, we still haven’t been able to air fry using these stoves. The cavities are too big to effectively move the air, but that’s just my thinking.
We have a new chef who will test air frying and other modes so you can have that fried food taste without the calories.
Why Electric Range Reliability Matters
Reliability is a very elusive measurement in our industry. It is incredibly important to buy a reliable appliance, especially now.
Repair is a giant, unspoken problem in this industry due to a lack of qualified technicians- so be careful.
Since many electric ranges are alike, I recommend searching for the top-rated appliance service providers in your area.
How We Determine Electric Range Reliability
To calculate electric range reliability, we divide the number of products serviced by the number sold over 12 months.
You won’t find reliable posts like this on the internet. Stores typically do not have service departments or offer little service.
Thus, they can’t deliver or collect significant data. There is no benchmark for initial quality in the appliance business.
Consumer Reports tests appliances in a lab and reports results. They also rank brands based on predictive analysis by surveying consumers over ten years.
This method can be problematic. Consumer Reports weighs past and current issues similarly, but you’re buying now – not ten years ago.
However, I am a member, and it’s still a good reference, though I don’t depend on their results exclusively.
Based on recent service calls, you want to see how these products will work in your home.
For this reason, we have devised a better formula by determining reliability based on actual in-home repairs.
We have over 35 (soon to be 42) service technicians performing 8–10 service calls daily, which amounted to over 33,000 service calls logged in 2024.
The Most Reliable Electric Ranges for 2025
Electric ranges are among the most reliable types of appliances, with an average service rate of 6.9% – well below the overall industry average of 9%.
The chart below breaks down reliability by brand, based on data from over 600 products sold in the past 12 months (with each brand selling at least 70 units).
Electric Range Reliability for 2025
 | Service Rates |
GE Appliances | 5.2% |
GE Profile | 8.5% |
LGÂ | 3.6% |
LG Studio | 7.3% |
Café Appliances | 11.9% |
Grand Total | 6.9% |
Advanced ranges tend to have higher repair rates depending on the brand, although the issues aren’t too severe.
For example, basic GE electric ranges were repaired only 5.2% of the time, the more-featured Profile 8.5% of the time, and the best, most-featured Café 11.9% of the time.
Similarly, LG models have a repair rate of 3.6%, while the LG Studio registered 7.3%.
We found that the most common electric range problems last year were control panel flashing and burners not heating.
The control panel controls the range, so that’s a problem.
It’s easy enough to fix burners that aren’t heating, plus you have three other burners to use when one isn’t working.
In addition, electric ranges can trip breakers, depending on the breaker’s maximum amperage.
Induction vs. Electric Ranges: Which Is More Reliable?
We cover induction vs electric ranges in other posts.
Induction ranges have better burners because they heat up faster – delivering an instant simmer – and they don’t heat the glass, making them safer and easier to clean.
However, an induction range uses 50 amps, so it is susceptible to voltage spikes.
Although induction is far better to use, electric ranges are more reliable.
đź’ˇPro Tip: Never self-clean your oven before a holiday or cooking event. Self-cleaning is a 900-degree heat cycle that can cause problems in older ranges.
Why Are Electric Ranges So Reliable?
As I mentioned earlier, electric ranges haven’t changed much in the past 39 years.
The pan doesn’t have direct contact with the heating elements. With the elements positioned under glass, there’s a lower risk of breakage.
In contrast, with a gas range, the pan is in direct contact with the flame – and there’s no additional magnet “driver” like in induction models.
In fact, the number one repair for gas ranges is the burner ignition on top of the range due to spillage.
Most companies have a long history of manufacturing electric ranges, dating back to the 1920s. Since then, manufacturers have incrementally improved the heating element.
When I started at Yale in 1986, many companies like GE and Whirlpool didn’t even produce gas ranges – they offered a full portfolio of electric cooking products.

Should You Buy an Extended Warranty for an Electric Range?
I would not buy an extended warranty unless you buy it from an actual service department.
Since 95% of the stores do not offer service, you are better off taking your chances and saving money.
In the unlikely event your store does offer service, then it’s insurance against a larger future service bill. Just do not use the self-clean mode during the holidays.

Choosing the Best Electric Range for Your Kitchen
Electric Range Style
You have three styles of electric ranges: freestanding, front control, and slide-in.
Freestanding ranges have all the controls on the back.
Slide-in and front control ranges feature controls on the front, which makes them look better because you can see your backsplash without the obstruction of a back guard.
Slide-ins overlap the top of your counter, creating a built-in look that eliminates that messy seam to clean; however, front control ranges use the same cutout as freestanding models and are easier to install.
For that reason, front control ranges are produced more often than slide-in ranges.

Features of an Electric Range
Electric Stovetop
Stovetops vary from the classic 4-5 burners to larger, oblong griddle burners. They can include multiple rings on the burners that adjust to fit your pan size.
đź’ˇPro tip: When cooking on an electric stovetop, make sure your pan size matches the burner size; otherwise, the burner may cycle off and on, leading to inefficiency and a poor cooking experience.
Electric Ovens
The outside dimensions of an electric range are generally 30 inches wide and 35 inches tall, but the ovens can vary.
LG electric ranges feature the largest ovens at 6.3 cubic feet, although larger double ovens up to 7 cubic feet are available.
The logical progression of features starts with standard ovens, then moves to convection ovens with fan-forced heat for more even cooking.
In addition, you can purchase more advanced ranges with warming drawers and double ovens.
Best Electric Ranges of 2025: Top Picks & Features
Finding a dependable electric range is easy – choose the style and then the features you prefer.
Many companies experienced supply issues during the pandemic; however, availability seems to be returning to normal.
Let’s look at the best options available now (though the rankings may change over time).
Best Overall: LG LREL6323S
Features:
- Convection oven for even baking
- 5 burners (with adjustable sizes)
- 6.3 Cu. Ft. capacity (largest in class)
- No Air Fry mode (but most don’t work well anyway)
Best for Features: GE Profile PB900YVFS
Features:
- Air Fry mode & convection
- Wi-Fi & smart app integration
- Recipe tie-ins for cooking guidance
- Slightly higher repair rate (8.5%)
Both LG and GE Profile electric ranges are similar, featuring convection ovens and five burners on top – one of which is a warming burner.
They offer two adjustable burners (12/9 inch and 9/6 inch) to accommodate different pan sizes.
Both ranges also include Wi-Fi, allowing you to turn the range on or off remotely, adjust the temperature, and receive text alerts via an app.
The GE Profile range even offers unique recipe tie-ins through its app.
Although Air Fry mode is the newest feature available on both models, it has not performed well on any range we’ve tried.
Largest Oven: LG LSEL6335FE
Â
Features:
- Smart Control: Use the ThinQ app for remote access and alerts.
- Adjustable Burners: Dual and triple elements fit different cookware sizes.
- Even Cooking: ProBake Convection ensures consistent results.
- Healthier Air Frying: Crispy meals with little to no oil.
- InstaView Window: Knock twice to check inside.
LG’s front control range introduces new features like pro bake convection and a convection conversion mode, which transforms your standard cooking recipe into a convection recipe.
It also offers one of the largest ovens at 6.3 cubic feet, complete with an Instaview window – just knock twice on the glass to see inside the oven.
Key Takeaways
I’m a fan of any reliable product regardless of the brand, because repairing appliances under warranty can be expensive.
Most basic electric ranges are dependable; their time-tested technology is safeguarded by a solid glass top.
However, repair numbers tend to increase as you add options, so be careful. You might consider opting for the reliable stove over the more heavily featured model.
