It all started with an unexpected call.
“You’re interested?”
I asked the person on the phone, almost incredulously.
I couldn’t believe it. I was looking to hire one of his students – not the actual teacher.
This person is one of the most important hires I have ever made.
Seriously.
Before I tell you who it is, let me explain why this is important – and how it affects the way you shop for appliances.
Appliances 1986–2025
When I started working full-time at Yale, buying appliances was so much simpler.
Back then, ranges were all the same size – until Viking popularized the first larger professional range in 1990.
You typically bought a KitchenAid dishwasher (made by Hobart), Maytag laundry, and a GE refrigerator.
For high-end appliances, your options were Thermador, JennAir, and maybe Sub-Zero.
There were no steam ovens, speed ovens, coffee systems, grills, griddles, sous vide cooking bays, smart functionality – or even the internet.
Now, everything has changed.
Today, there are 15 luxury appliance brands to choose from, each offering unique features and new technology.
Yale Home Appliance Blog 2007–2025
We started the Yale Appliance Home Appliance Blog in 2007 because there was a need for unbiased, factual information about how to buy appliances and renovate.
Since then, the blog has become a trusted resource, providing direct comparisons between brands and lists of the best products to consider.
We also go a step further by publishing real service rates based on actual service calls – information you won’t find anywhere else.
That said, our experience with appliances has been somewhat limited. While they’re hooked up live in our showrooms, they’ve only been used sparingly – primarily in our homes or for occasional demos.
But that’s about to change.
On February 1, everything will be different.
Yale Appliance Welcomes Renowned Chef Steve Shipley as New Resident Chef
We have had some incredible chefs cook at Yale – Gordon Hammersley, Lydia Shire, Jodie Adams of Trade, Chris Coombs of Boston Chops, Yan Can Cook, Ming Tsai – all of whom are exceptional.
However, Steve is the favorite for his engaging demos and considerable product knowledge.
I’ve never asked him a question he didn’t know extensively.
Then again, he worked at Johnson and Wales for 30 years. I thought I would be hiring one of his former students.
Steve’s culinary journey is nothing short of impressive.
His culinary journey began at Johnson and Wales University (JWU), where he earned his associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.
Over the years, he became an integral part of the JWU community, eventually serving as Director of Culinary Relations.
Before returning to JWU, Steve spent a decade in New York City, honing his skills in nearly every facet of the foodservice industry – from kitchens to operations and everything in between.
At JWU, Steve’s role extended beyond teaching. He helped shape the culinary world by working on high-profile projects like PBS’s Master Class at Johnson and Wales University and A Slice of Advice.
Steve is also known for his engaging cooking demonstrations, having showcased his expertise for renowned brands and events like Cuisinart, Vollrath, Sunsweet Fruits, Chartwells, the Big E in Springfield – and even here at Yale Appliance.
His ability to connect with audiences and share his vast knowledge makes him one of the best in the business.
Chef Steve Shipley’s Role at Yale Appliance
Steve will primarily be doing demos because he loves to cook. He’ll work with different manufacturers across our five showrooms.
You might catch him demonstrating appliances from Wolf, Miele, Thermador, or SKS.
He’ll also dive into specific products like steam ovens, speed ovens, or sous vide cooking.
This means you can ask questions while he’s actively using the appliances.
Master Your Appliances with Chef Steve Shipley
Once you buy your appliances, Steve will also lead use-and-care sessions.
These sessions offer deeper dives into basic operations, cleaning and maintenance tips, and even a few recipes to try.
New appliances can transform how you cook – but only if you know how to use them properly.
Steve will teach you all of that and more.
I’m excited because he will bring a unique depth to the blog by understanding every nuance of cooking and appliance usage.
But more importantly, it’s a game-changer for you if you’re planning a new kitchen.
Finally, you’ll have the cooking insight you need to choose the appliances that are right for you.
Steve starts cooking on February 1.
We’ll publish his calendar of featured brands and Yale locations in late January.
